Everything you need to know about Botox

Consultation, realistic expectations, and professional application are important before every botulinum toxin treatment.

Botox is the commonly used name for treatment with botulinum toxin. In aesthetic medicine, it is used to temporarily reduce the activity of selected facial muscles, softening dynamic wrinkles caused by frowning, raising the eyebrows, or smiling.

The treatment is brief and minimally invasive, but it involves a medicine that must be administered by an appropriately trained healthcare professional after an examination and assessment.

Why are consultations important?

Before treatment, facial expressions, the position of the eyebrows and eyelids, facial symmetry, muscle strength, and skin quality are assessed. The desired result, previous treatments, medical conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding, allergies, medications, and dietary supplements are discussed.

Botulinum toxin and dermal fillers are not the same treatment. Toxin reduces muscle activity, while a filler restores volume or shapes a specific area. They are sometimes combined, but only when there is a clear indication.

What does the treatment involve?

After cleansing the skin, the doctor uses a fine needle to apply small amounts of the medicine to precisely selected muscles. The number of injections and the amount of medicine depend on the anatomy, the area, and the desired effect. Most people describe only brief discomfort.

The effect does not appear immediately. It begins to develop over several days, and the full result is usually assessed after approximately two weeks. The effect is temporary and gradually weakens over the following months.

After the treatment

  • follow the individual instructions of the doctor who performed the treatment
  • do not press or massage the treated area without instructions
  • postpone intense physical activity and exposure to strong heat as recommended
  • attend the follow-up appointment at the agreed time so the result can be assessed

Possible side effects

The most common side effects are temporary redness, tenderness, swelling, bruising, or headache. Depending on the area, temporary asymmetry, drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid, and unwanted weakness of a neighboring muscle can rarely occur.

If difficulty swallowing or breathing, pronounced muscle weakness, visual disturbances, or symptoms of an allergic reaction occur, seek medical help immediately.

A natural result begins with a good plan

The goal of treatment is not necessarily a completely immobile face, but a balanced and natural result adapted to the patient's anatomy and wishes. A larger amount of medicine does not automatically mean a better result. Safety, product quality, and the expertise of the person administering it are more important than the price of the treatment.
