FOR PATIENTS
Prepare with confidence.
Choose an examination or sample to find its preparation instructions. If the clinic gave you specific instructions, follow those first.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Preparation guides.
These instructions are general information. For questions about medicines, health conditions, or individual preparation, contact your doctor or the clinic.
PREPARATION GUIDEPreparation for a systematic examination
The day before your examination
- Eat light, easily digestible food. Avoid fatty, heavily spiced, and heavy meals, as well as foods that cause bloating, such as legumes, cabbage, raw vegetables, and carbonated drinks, because gas can make an abdominal ultrasound more difficult.
- Do not drink alcohol. Avoid energy drinks and beverages with a lot of sugar.
- Skip intense training, the gym, and strenuous physical activity because they can temporarily affect some laboratory values.
- Drink your usual amount of water. Do not arrive dehydrated, but do not overdo fluids either.
- Prepare previous findings, discharge letters, and a list of all medicines and supplements you take. Write down any questions you have for the doctor.
The evening before your examination
- Have a light final meal earlier in the evening. After that, do not eat for 8–12 hours before your blood draw.
- Plain water is allowed during the fast. Do not drink juice, sweetened tea, milk, or other drinks containing calories.
- Get a good night’s sleep. Lack of sleep and stress can affect blood pressure, pulse, and some laboratory findings.
The morning of your examination
- Arrive fasting: do not eat breakfast or chew gum. Before the examination, avoid coffee, tea, energy drinks, and smoking.
- You may drink plain water. If your program includes a bladder or prostate ultrasound, follow the instructions you received about having a full bladder.
- Do not stop regular therapy on your own. Take it as directed by your doctor with a small amount of water. If you have diabetes, take medicine that must be taken with food, or are unsure what to do, contact us before your examination.
- If urine analysis is part of your examination, bring the first morning midstream urine in a sterile pharmacy container, following the instructions you received.
- Bring your identity and health insurance cards, previous findings, and your medication list. Arrive 10–15 minutes early so you can rest briefly before your blood pressure is measured.
Please note: The exact preparation depends on the examinations in your program. Any specific instructions provided by your doctor or the clinic take priority over these general guidelines.
PREPARATION GUIDEPreparation for colonoscopy
- Bowel preparation is done with the cleansing product recommended by your doctor or the clinic. Take it exactly as instructed because the timing and method depend on your examination time.
- The day before the examination, switch to clear liquids according to the instructions you received. Do not drink red, purple, or opaque drinks, milk, or drinks containing pieces.
- Once cleansing begins, stay near a toilet and drink permitted clear liquids to replace lost fluids.
- If you take blood thinners or diabetes medication, or have kidney or heart disease, are pregnant, or have allergies, contact your doctor in advance. Do not stop therapy on your own.
- If the examination is performed with sedation or anesthesia, arrange for someone to accompany you and do not drive after the examination. Follow the clinic’s instructions for exactly when to stop eating and drinking.
PREPARATION GUIDEPreparation for gastroscopy
- You must arrive fasting so that your stomach is empty. Do not eat for at least 6 hours before the examination.
- Clear liquids are usually stopped 2 hours before the examination, but follow the exact time in the instructions you received when booking.
- Do not smoke, chew gum, or take sweets before the examination.
- If you take blood thinners or diabetes medication, have allergies, or take regular medication that must be taken in the morning, consult your doctor in advance. Do not stop therapy on your own.
- If the examination is performed with sedation or anesthesia, arrange for someone to accompany you and do not drive or operate machinery afterwards.
PREPARATION GUIDECollecting a fecal occult blood sample
- Collect the sample in a clean, dry container or the kit provided by the laboratory. Empty your bladder first so that the stool does not mix with urine.
- The stool must not come into contact with toilet water. Collect it on a clean, dry surface or according to the instructions supplied with the kit.
- Use the stick or spoon to take a small amount of stool from several different places and put it into the labeled container. The container does not need to be filled completely.
- If you received several containers, collect samples from different bowel movements as indicated on the kit. Mark each container with the collection date.
- Store and deliver the sample according to the laboratory instructions, usually as soon as possible. Do not collect it during menstruation, active bleeding from hemorrhoids, or visible blood in the urine without first consulting your doctor.
PREPARATION GUIDEPreparation for a blood draw
- If the tests require fasting, do not eat for 8–12 hours before the blood draw. You may drink plain water.
- Eat normally the day before and avoid alcohol, very fatty meals, and intense physical activity.
- Do not drink coffee, tea, or juice before the blood draw and avoid smoking.
- Do not stop regular therapy on your own. The exact preparation depends on the tests requested, so contact your doctor or the laboratory if you are unsure.
PREPARATION GUIDEUrine culture and antibiogram sample
- The sample is best collected in the morning, immediately after getting up.
- Wash your genital area before collecting the sample and do not dry it with a towel.
- Open the sterile container, let the first stream pass, and collect the midstream urine in the container.
- Do not touch the inside of the container or lid, and deliver the sample according to the laboratory instructions.
PREPARATION GUIDEUrological ultrasound or uroflowmetry
- Empty your bladder two hours before the appointment, then drink 8–10 dl of fluid at once.
- Do not urinate until the examination. If you have frequent urination, try to arrive with your bladder as full as you can comfortably tolerate.
